Paid version of Underline coming to iOS this Thursday

Since we launched the free version of Underline on iOS back in December we have had a number of features by Apple in the likes of What We Are Playing and the New & Noteworthy and some great reviews from players. Following this we thought it was a good time to release the fully unlocked paid version on the store, so it will be releasing worldwide on the App Store this Thursday.

The paid version brings all the addictive word play from the free version minus the adverts and with all four fun game modes unlocked ready to play.

Classic – letters will constantly drop from the top of the screen getting faster the longer you last and the better you play. Earn multipliers and bonus tiles to clear the board with bonus chains and earn higher scores.

Time Attack – this is like Classic mode but with a twist, the clock is always ticking and you must try and keep it topped up by playing words; the longer the word the more time added to your clock. How long will you last?

Wordsearch - in this mode you start with a solid grid of letters and you have two minutes to find as many words as possible, each time you remove a word it will be replaced with fresh letters.

Pass N Play – Take on a friend with this tactical twist on Time Attack Mode.

When it launches it will be available from the following link and for a trailer head over to YouTube.

Press Round-up

Since Underline launched at the start of the month we’ve had quite a bit of press for the game and a number of interviews with our Technical Director Dave, here’s a round-up of some of the coverage.

Underline Coverage

Underline was released as one of the 21 launch titles on PlayStation Mobile on Oct 3rd and is available on PS Vita and PS certified Android devices.

PlayStation Mobile & Underline Interviews

PocketGamer.biz got in touch with us to see what our thoughts were on PlayStation Mobile and the launch of the store and our game. We covered things such as issues we had during development, what attracted us to the platform and more. Read the full interview here.

PSN Stores also asked us to do an interview about how we had found developing for the platform and to tell them more about the game. You can find that interview here.

Other Press

Last week we were also asked for our views on the Kickstarter launch in the UK at the end of the month and what it meant for games development here. Read the interview here.

Underline launched on PlayStation Mobile

We have been a little quiet over the last few months but now you all know why, we have been working on bringing our new game Underline to Sony’s new PlayStation Mobile store as one of the initial 20 launch titles.

Here’s the full press release on the game:

We are pleased to announce that our new game Underline has been released today as part of Sony’s new PlayStation Mobile store on PS Vita and certain Sony certified Android devices.

Underline is a fast-paced, addictive word game bringing elements of a variety of classic games together. As the letters drop from the top of the screen you must find and draw words in the grid making sure to not let a column fill up! You are rewarded for speed and skill with special multipliers and bonuses. These special tiles can clear rows, act as a ‘blank’ letter, or multiply your score as you compete to top the leader-board. Use the coins you earn in-game to buy weapons which clear the grid, shuffle the tiles, give you a head start or even freeze time.

Game-play is split over a number of modes:

Classic: letters will constantly drop from the top of the screen getting faster the longer you last and the better you play. Earn multipliers and bonus tiles to clear the board with bonus chains and earn higher scores.

Time Attack: this is like Classic mode but with a twist, the clock is always ticking and you must try and keep it topped up by playing words; the longer the word the more time added to your clock. How long will you last?

Wordsearch: in this mode you start with a solid grid of letters and you have two minutes to find as many words as possible, each time you remove a word it will be replaced with fresh letters.

Pass N Play: In this mode take on a friend and see who ends up running out of time first in this multiplayer version of Time Attack mode.

PlayStation Mobile allows games to not only be played on Vita but also many Android devices including Sony Tablet S, Sony Xperia phones (including Xperia Play) and HTC One series phones with more devices being supported in the near future. Underline’s simple touch mechanic means the same fast paced experienced can be delivered on all devices.

Shorts Or Not released on Windows Phone

Following on from our announcement on Monday, we are pleased to announce that our first Windows Phone app is now on the marketplace. Shorts or Not brings all the fun and quirkiness from the iPhone version straight to your Windows Phone so no matter where you are you can find out whether its a shorts day or not and share it with you friends.

PowerDown and Shorts or Not coming to Windows Phone 7

Just over a week ago we decided to have a play around with Windows Phone 7(WP7) and the recent Cocos2d-XNA port and have to say so far I am are very impressed. The engine port is only in its very early stages but the core functionality is all there meaning that taking a Cocos2d iPhone game or app across to WP7 is a relatively painless process. If you want to find out more about it yourself take a look here.

The first app I ported across was our popular weather app Shorts or Not, I will be adding a tutorial in the coming weeks related to some of the things I found out while moving this across to C# such as parsing XML files and pulling data from a web service.But all the functionality seen in the iOS version is available on this version so very soon even more people will be finding out if its ‘Shorts’ weather where they are.

Following the port of Shorts or Not I thought I would try and bring our hit puzzle game PowerDown across to the platform and again this was relatively painless. Apart from having to approach a few things slightly differently the core functionality was all working in a very short space of time. All 350 puzzles and different types from the iPhone version are present so time to challenge those brain cells.

Both apps are currently in review at the moment and all being well will be released in the next week or so.

Posting to Instagram from your app

Since the Facebook SDK removed the ability to pre-provide a message to post to a users wall, Twitter has been our only way of easily allowing people to share with their friends whether or not it was a ‘shorts’ day from our iOS weather app Shorts or Not. But with the quirky style of our app and the rise in use of Instagram I thought I would add in the ability to share a screenshot via their API.

 For taking the screenshot there is a useful function which has been posted on the Cocos2d forums here but you could post any UIImage using the same technique.

UIImage * screenshot = [[CCDirector sharedDirector] screenshotUIImage];
NSString *savePath = [NSHomeDirectory() stringByAppendingPathComponent:@"Documents/Screenshot.igo"];

// Write image to JPEG
[UIImageJPEGRepresentation(screenshot, 1.0) writeToFile:savePath atomically:YES];

The next step is then to set the save path. We want this to open in Instagram exclusively so the extension should be ‘.igo’ ideally but you can also use ‘.ig’. The image should also be saved in JPEG or PNG format. Once we have written the image to the device we can then use the Instagram iPhone hooks, for more information on these go here. For the purposes of this application we only need to use the default app hook to open up the app.

NSURL *instagramURL = [NSURL URLWithString:@"instagram://app"];

if ([[UIApplication sharedApplication] canOpenURL:instagramURL])
{

We create the URL and then check that it can be opened, i.e the Instagram app is actually available on the device. If it is then we can continue and uses Apple’s UIDocumentInteractionController class. This class can be used to open documents in matching programs that are on a users iOS device, the UTI variable defines the type of prgrams we want to open. Because we want our code to only use Instagram we pass it the UTI of ‘com.instagram.exclusivegram’

//imageToUpload is a file path with .ig file extension
documentInteractionController = [[UIDocumentInteractionController interactionControllerWithURL:[NSURL fileURLWithPath:savePath]]retain];
documentInteractionController.UTI = @"com.instagram.exclusivegram";
documentInteractionController.delegate = self;

You can also pass in a default caption by adding text into the annotation variable, for example with Shorts or Not we post whether its shorts or not weather today. The annotation value is an NSDictionary with the key ‘InstagramCaption’.

if(shortsFlag)
    documentInteractionController.annotation = [NSDictionary dictionaryWithObject:@"Today is a Shorts day! Try Shorts Or Not for where you are - http://bit.ly/iDYwYC via @albino_pixel" forKey:@"InstagramCaption"];
else
    documentInteractionController.annotation = [NSDictionary dictionaryWithObject:@"Today is not a Shorts day! Try Shorts Or Not for where you are - http://bit.ly/iDYwYC via @albino_pixel" forKey:@"InstagramCaption"];
[documentInteractionController presentOpenInMenuFromRect:CGRectZero inView:[self appController].view.window animated:YES];

And then finally to present the menu of available apps we use the presentOpenInMenuFromRect call, which will give you a screen like below.

So the full function is as follows, and is called when ever the user presses our Instagram button.

-(void) instagramPressed:(id) sender
{
    UIImage * screenshot = [[CCDirector sharedDirector] screenshotUIImage];

    NSString *savePath = [NSHomeDirectory() stringByAppendingPathComponent:@"Documents/Screenshot.igo"];

    // Write image to PNG
    [UIImageJPEGRepresentation(screenshot, 1.0) writeToFile:savePath atomically:YES];

    NSURL *instagramURL = [NSURL URLWithString:@"instagram://app"];

    if ([[UIApplication sharedApplication] canOpenURL:instagramURL]) {
        //imageToUpload is a file path with .ig file extension
        documentInteractionController = [[UIDocumentInteractionController interactionControllerWithURL:[NSURL fileURLWithPath:savePath]]retain];
        documentInteractionController.UTI = @"com.instagram.exclusivegram";
        documentInteractionController.delegate = self;

        documentInteractionController.annotation = [NSDictionary dictionaryWithObject:@"Insert Caption here" forKey:@"InstagramCaption"];
        [documentInteractionController presentOpenInMenuFromRect:CGRectZero inView:[self appController].view.window animated:YES];

    }
}

Hopefully this tutorial was useful but if you have any questions feel free to get in touch, and don’t forget to download Shorts or Not :)
